This is the first in a series of the blog posts on vision.  First, on discovering your deeper vision in times of transition.  Second, on being a servant leader.  And third, on inspiring vision in others.

On the path of self-emergence many of us face crisis points where our old motivations fall away.  These are precious places of fertility and growth, and perfect opportunities to realign your activities with what you’re really here to do.

Taking the time to clarify what you are fundamentally about re-enlivens your passion for life.

People often report that they ended up doing what they are doing by following rather than choosing. They had the capability and doors opened by doing what others asked of them. Then there comes a time when the person cannot do it that way any longer. What comes next has to be chosen based on what is uniquely theirs to do.

So what’s your reason for being here?  Deep down, what vision are you serving?  What are you called to bring into the world?

Here are some processes our clients have found helpful:

  • Review moments in your life when you were giving your best.  What gifts and strengths did you express?  This points to what is yours to give now.
  • Consider what situations are most conducive to your gift. What switches you on? What switches you off?
  • Notice what tugs at your heartstrings. For example, what kinds of people do you most enjoy helping? What kinds of suffering make you care?
  • Reflect on what you admire.  If particular people come to mind, what specific qualities do they have?  Generally, “if you spot it, you’ve got it.”

Once you are clear about your unique gift and vision, make it big.  Literally.  Make a representation of your gift and vision in words or symbol and put it up somewhere to remind yourself.  You can go back to it for inspiration, or to modify it, whenever you need.

Who you are is your part to play in the world. Living a fulfilling life inspires others to do the same.
